It’s more fun
When you’re on the treadmill or exercise bike, there’s not much to look at besides the wall in front of you. Once you get outside, you have the chance to choose your own scenery.
Why not have a run around that picturesque park near your home, or look for woodland trails and cycle paths in your local area? The list of options is a long as you want to make it.
Giving yourself some beautiful new surroundings will prevent your workout from becoming a chore and help you push yourself further than ever before. In the gym, you’ve nothing to distract you from how tired you’re getting. Outside, you’ll be so busy enjoying the fresh air - not to mention watching where you put your feet - you won’t even notice.
You’ll improve your mental health
As well as making your workout more enjoyable, just being outside is enough to trigger an improvement in your mental health. Studies have shown that looking at a beautiful view can boost your mood. Shutting yourself indoors definitely doesn’t!
Bringing a little nature into your jog or cycle is a great way to get yourself in a positive frame of mind for the day ahead, or even relax at the end of a difficult day.
There are physical health benefits too
Spending an hour in the sun each day will ensure you get more than enough Vitamin D, which is important for strong bones, healthy muscles and a robust immune system.
Sunlight only provides this benefit when it makes direct contact with your skin. Even if you manage to get the treadmill by the window, none of the sun’s benefits can pass through the glass.
You can also be a bit choosier about your running terrain. Treadmills provide quite a hard surface that puts a lot of impact on your joints with each step you take. Using them a lot can increase your risk of injury. Outdoors, you can seek out softer surfaces such as grass and earth that will be a little gentler on your knees and ankles.
